architecture becomes more interesting or more and more interestingbecause this is about life about nature, about interpersonal relationship, between human and him/herself,between human and larger reality, including nature this is what makes us never donetalking about architecture

arsitektur desain, architecture is firstly about the place we stay and its implications to many things for example, social matter, ormatter of identity identity in scale of private life, group, or nation
architecture can be a tool forcharacter building architecture is the most comprehensive subject architecture can be something that moves, can be something we wears can be something that is folded 24 hours architecture education may be one of the least understood education in society, even though "architecture" and "architect"are two familiar words general perceptions of architecture educationare always about many assignments and lacks of sleep what really happen actually in architecture education?
are those perceptions true? if they're true, what is the purpose and background? how is the correlation with learningin the architecture education? and what is the relevance with whatthey're about to face in architecture profession later? architecture education is almostthe most complete education compared to any other education in architecture, we are indeed required to be a building designer but, actually in designing a building, there are so many dimensions. start from the very private matter, let say toilet, until a matter of a city
a matter of environment so actually in architecture education, what really should be learnt is really broad from the smallest scale, building details, construction, until the architects' considerationstowards their neighbours, their surrounding environtment, and so on architecture is the most comprehensive subject, all in for example, if an architect is commisionedto build a mental hospital inevitably he must learn psychology, inevitably he must learn about hospital until he know that hospital has many different types
if he is commisioned to design a prison,he must know how a prison works. so, it is really comprehensive. i think it is really interesting.all subjects are included in there. the uniqueness of architecture education, based on my experiences are we will learn about concept, thinking process, combined with management, engineering, but at the same timeyou will learn about art architecture education is conducted by means of studio this is unique and i think this is a remarkable approach and it is right why? because in the studiostudents are given opportunity
to recognize problems that theywill face when they are graduated in my imagination before enrollingarchitecture school architect just making small modelsfrom paper or carton but, when i enrolled here, i got the basic design studio in the first year the assignments are like these, making these giants frameworks it's so different from my firstimmagination before enrolling, i ask some informations from seniors about architecture school so i know that i will stay awakeoften but it turns out when i enroll to uph architecture, it's not just stay awake
but also making huge modelsmeters by meters long and doing sawing doing teamwork, making model in the middleof the rain, until late at night what they learn mainly is the logic of materials when they deal directly with materialsthey could feel the weight they could feel the textureand when they know the texture, they could also know that cuttingdifferent kind of timber needs different effort so, they could choose which kind could be used as structural support and which kind could be used asfinishing cover those logics are introduced unconsciously
the heavy weight timber supportthe light weight timber the heavy weight one have some kind of texture, and the light weight have another kind of texture it is all learnt by doing, not theoritically that is what evolve to the architecture way of thinking something heavy support something light and so on the mapping of human being, not just with space, but also with materials they use if wood is touched, they couldfeel the quality of it stone, if it is cut, they couldproduce some kind surface multiplied with another scaleswe could have wf steel
it could be bolted, and we cansee the details are nice if it is welded, it is smudged that is very applicative when we talk about that but i think architecture educationshould be very simple the basic is how we are doing mapping between human and material, space, light, and environment. that's it so there is a problem of close connection between ideas and how it is implemented we could not be fragmented as architect so the craftmanship, the knowledge of materials and how to deal with it is the required knowledge that must bemastered by an architect
we could not tell someone if wedon't know that person's ability likewise with the material selection, structural system selection, we must know the characteristics of every material or minimally the materials that we wantto use and how to deal with it if we could not do it by ourselfwe need another team, that are the craftmen we must realize about the craftmanship that they have from the first semester, especially in the first semester we learn about the basic of aesthetics.it is very fun it is actually like playing games
like, i dont know, the subject names could be different in different campus in my campus back then the subject names for example architecture drawing, color scheme when we learn about color, about shape or form, dimmension, proportion, composition9200:09:24:00 --> 00:09:27.50i think it is like kindergartenbut an advance one we are actually being builtour sensibility to, first, two dimmensions, about composition and proportion we are built very slowly we make a composition from small to big, etc. that is actually the process of building aesthetic sensibility
and it is built in first semesterbased on my experience i think in architecture, the students are more solid maybe because we have this basecamp, studio so after liberal arts class, we could gather here and we could also knowand hang out with the seniors but maybe the tough thing is the non-stopassignments that always haunt us everyday the hardwork this proffesion is a little bit unfair because there are too many things that must be done
so, in the practice we use the working time"nine to five" to meet clients, contractors, projects so, when is the time to think? it is imposible to interact while we think it is not as intense as we imagine eventually, we think at night so, that is why architecture is identical with the night life welcome to architecture night life but that is the reality that is to say that our working hour is long because what i said earlier
there are too many things we should know, too many things we should learn but our time is so short but the more we know how to use time, the more things that we could learn it is an acquired knowledge, knowledge we collect slowly so the more intense we do it,the more often we do overtime maybe we could be smart faster. more or less like that. but we must also use common sense working everywhere should be efficient, smart
if it does not need 24 hours, then it should not be 24 hours although everyone could havedifferent preferences about it studio, writing, designing, drawingproblem solving, finding solutions that are creative processes that are always running sometimes it could not be limited we can't say, you must find solutionby sixteen minutes past four o clock we can't. it is a creative processthat can often makes us forgetting the time it turns out that it is 01.00 a.m.but i'm still fresh i just find new solutions
it turns out to be 08.00 p.m.but i'm just getting started these things are typically happeningin architecture studios both in the schoolor in the real work in my opinion, everywhere in the worldcreative work requires long hours because there are so many requirements eyes (aesthetics), hands (craftmanship),and brain; those three things so, in another science field, maybe what is required just brain only it makes satiety, people get bored easily if it only hands, we could get tired easily
but architecture is differentthose three things are required, eyes, brain, and hands it is all correlated and really fun architecture school is the mostlabor-intensive school i think it is proven everywherebecause to be a good architect, i myself feel that when i begin practicingthe most usefull skill is the skill i acquired in the workshop making model by myself, cutting timber by myself those must be experienced those what make architecture needs timebecause everything must be done by our own hands
there are three types of campus in thewhole world that open 24 hours 365 days per year first, architecture school.go everywhere in the world second, medical shool.third, law school architecture, because our work is studio based work except, scholastic research, by readingand thinking textually but if the research are done by design, by doing inevitably studio become the core, and i think it is correct and a studio work is never finished until the moment we submit and present it modullar, a prefabricated house
the most important is the room modules the modules must be as efficient as possible so there is one module that becomes the keyand the other modules follow it maybe the problem is, there are so many thingsthat should be thought of, but the time is limited and we must gather many informastionsto find the best solution until last minute so it looks like that thereis never enough time because there is always an eager to achievethe better, become better that is what is sought after but actually life is always like that
not just a matter of finishing works, and getting busy at some periods but it is a spirit to find a better solutions continuously i think that is an architect's duty i don't know whether it is a blessingor curse, curse of profession inevitably we must seek after the bestof the best solutions to every problem 24 hours is a way to say that we continue the communication not working 24 hours without stop, like hard labor it can happen everywhere after we get tired in studio,we go outside with friends
in some cafes, or meeting in someone's house we keep on talking about it,we continue the communication consistent with our mission that studio is collaborative and communication in architecture pofessionthere are time when we must work 24 hours there are also time when there arenot many works to do because the fluctuation and tensionsof works are really dinamic that what actually should beintroduced in architecture education why? because not every project existeverytime need 24 hours continuously? no
only 6 or 8 hours working? neither because it is very fluctuativeand depends on the complexity of works but in education, those exercisescould not be avoided from stay awake for 2 days, until at the deadline stay awake for 2 weeks my parents saw me with pity, but they also appreciated me because they saw that i really enjoyed it until when they persuaded me todo something fun like watching moviesor eating out i could say no, i didn't want to gobecause it won't finished one reason, it was because of my responsibilityto finish my assignments
the other reason is i did it with pleasure i was really happy.i didn't feel tortured so eventually my parents feel pitybut they appreciated me surely it's tiring.working like this is tiring moreover the installation's sizereach 2 x 2 meters and more surely it's tiring but after it is finished and see the result, there is a satisfaction the people basically those who want to be architectbecause they are creative,
they like drawing, designing, etcthey go to college based on passion and this passion will defeat everything defeat exhaustion, defeat boringness, defeat many things i see if there are some students stop inthe middle of the study process admittedly they are not suitable to the field so if in the first semester they have felt too difficult i say "do not continue" because it is nothing compared towhat they face when they become architects but when they begin practicing, architect usually feel more enjoyed
start from where?we must formulating. to achieve the four year competence we need some types of students not everybody qualified, to be honest combining technique and art.it is not easy it requires certain qualifications therefore, not everbody can successfullyachieve that in education combining technique and artto create space the qualification is not easy architecture needs openmind
needs some energy to always move and also something that comefrom the heart needs really great passion sometimes we do something that is not necessarily exist but there is willingness to dosome efforts for that sometimes it is absurd we seek, but we do not really surewhat exactly we seek but it is actually those little willingnessthat make life happens maybe students that are independent, open mind and have an awareness to others
that's what important, because becoming architect is not for themselves but to make some changes and improvementsof life for others, for greater reality changes from before she study architecture until now are pretty much, positively and negatively the positive one, she was lazy, not hardworking but when she study architecture, inevitably she is required to be patient, dilligent, persevere because she must met the deadline, many assignments, making models, proposals and i think it is a positive andsignificant trasformation but on the negative side, it is difficultto see her because she is always busy
but we can take the positives from that their hard works are not in vain because if there are no architects like themwho will make this mall, this big who can make hospital, houses so, we can take the positives,if there are no architects, where could we live? architect, like sport, may not be affiliated topolitics, to religion, and else architect must free from all that.so openmind is very important in my office, if you look at the websitethere is a statement that this office is against any discrimination towards gender, religion, sexual orientationand many more lists everyone must be able to work onthe same platform
that's the fun of architecture.so the people must be openmind when i interview people, especially the freshgrads i always ask what is your religion?just to check. for example, islam if someday i have a church projectand i asked you to design a church if he/she must think twice to answer that question, usually i have been rethinking about hiring him/her because that's openmind creative, love drawing or not must have above average intellectual capability the third one, this is one thingis he/she a spoiled kid?
is he/she tough-minded person? if he/she is not tough, in the future he/she won't be an architect must be tough. inside out. facing the field with craftmen, facing the client's fussiness furthermore if the client is a big company, a concorsium there are nine people who criticize our works what kind of character that is required that not tough? super the friendship
it really fun because we did it together with friends stay awake together, staying in the studio if we got stressed out,we're stressed out together so, we are not get down too much studio becomes delightful because everybody doing different project, and we can communicate, share thoughts giving feedbacks to each others there are many friends staying awake togetheruntil late at night, listening music together so the atmosphere that should be tiringbecause of the unstopable assignments becomes fun
because our friends could cheer us up actually, what they see must be inspiring seeing their friends working better seeing the positive atmosphere, producing good works producing tactical planning they could learn continuouslyfrom those inspirations that's what revives their spirit some assignments must be done in groups that's a lesson about teamwork,a lesson to build a team and working in team
and architect in the real world must work in team it won't be him/herself who becomethe craftmen and build his/her design and he/she will become leader in the teambecause the design is in his/her hand where the others will participatein realizing the design so, teamwork in a significant period of timeis really really useful experience the architect profession architect profession is not only about design but also interpersonal skill,it is all connected i think it is a remarkable profession, bringing happiness
i think architecture profession never has ill intention the intention is always to bringhappiness to others people become happy to havea good house and so on an architect does not only think artistically or aesthetically but can we give good solutions to a problem becoming practicioners are not reallydifferent than becoming students we do assignments, starting from initiation commisioning, then we think, rethink, proposing ideas, producing something there is a social responsibilitythat we must consider
that our work will live longer in society it will be annoying if it is not done correctly and it will become something thatis useless if there is no contribution to society so, it only becomes a statue that is laid waste but, sadly this statue is really big an architectural work is never small even one guarding post is quiet big, three or four meter squares try putting a post in the middle ofan entrance preventing cars to enter think about the effect all your life
we must think thoroughly, especially about social responsibility to the society and our stakeholders, including ourselves off course we want to make something good something that can make our reputation as architect could be known but the most important is social responsibility architect, without exaggerating, always works for a goodness in the future it can be assured.and this is interesting for example, i am an architectthen i am commisioned to design a prison prison is something to punish people, right?
but i will act, as i believeother architect will also act like this, that i will design a healthy prison cell there is enough ventilation, enough sun light not thinking to design a prison that will kill the prisoners in six months we will never think like that.we surely will think for goodness so that the prisoners feel comfortable, in other words, enough light and air so that he could be rehabilitated there and that is for goodness finding good solutions through architectural design, i think it is remarkable
only architecture school can do that the architecture education at this timeactually doesn't create a skillful persons or immediately skillful, ready to work my senior, marco kusumawijaya once said in facebook that undergradute school does not create ready-to-work person, but ready-to-think so we prepare the students to be ableto think for themselves not immediately can do anything.it is imposible one think that make me so happyis when i hear some of my students say to me "sir, i want to be an architect"
that is more than enough, rather than he has an a, or he is so clever and can do many things or his/her design is amazing for me that is second thing what must be built is attitude, motive, passion. thats is more than enough to openanything else for the next phase the meaning what is less known is that architectprofession is really needed maybe there are some opinions that architects are way up there for those who can afford to pay them, architects are so expensive
architects are experts, so they're expensive.craftmen can do the work as well but that's when we talk about houses everywhere, houses have exclusion the house owners can design themselves, call some craftmen, done. and it is permitted because the complexity, sorry to say, relatively simple and the owners know exactly what they want i want two rooms, one kitchen, one guess room then they could call experienced craftmenor they have friends who are contractors the house can be built, as long asall the building permits are settled
but architects do not just do that they are needed for projects more thanhouses how about hospital how about apartment how about housing complex, office, mall, airport. those need experts architects are needed those are only normal project we haven't talked about other projectsbeyond the mainstream
village improvement, urban planning, urban grey area revitalization, utilization of under bridge space there are many things that can betouched up by architects people used to think that success always linked to financial rewards that's why some high demand professional majors are always sellable in campuses at my times, it used to be mba, everyone seems obligated to have mba, master of business administration now it is not anymore, is it?almost not exist anymore now what is sellable is law schoolbecause lawyers are highly needed in indonesia which is still developing and arranging its legal institutions
but i think people still see lawyeras profession which generate big money lawyers are very rich, could buy ferraries more than one architects can not reach that leveleven when you work as hard as you can because the energy that is spent compared to the income you can read in all over the world, based on research by aia and others architect is the number 45th or 50th profession while lawyer and doctor is the first and second in america in indonesia lawyer is still income wise about fame, it's something else
because yesterday, there is a publication that stated that the sexiest profession on earth is male architect i don't know wether that could be a standard of success, or not. i just read it yesterday male architect, the sexiest profession on earthnot doctor, not lawyer, not singer architect, weird i think mmm.. not weird, but it's just a choice they choose to say that so, there is satisfaction
there is always satisfaction when youdeliver your work. that's invaluable. exactly like an artist when he create his masterpiece exactly like a doctor when he successfully cures his patient it's an invaluable satisfaction even though to reach that he/she mustsacrifices so much time you can see the famous doctors in indonesia, the cardiologists, professor eka for example he probably goes home at 4 am everyday but to see his dying patient could sit again, that's something... i don't know whether it's an egobecause we want to feel contributing to society
i don't know, but i think in architecture, there is that kind of feeling architect is the same i think.he create a better living environtment that's the purpose. why? people can actually live in caves.people can also live in tents. there is no need for houses actually people can trade on the road side, just on a mattress but the responsibility of architecture is first, what is needed by the environtment we can not build a building that is not environmentally friendly
that is the concept of built environment we can not also build a building that is not save for people for example, the building's stair makes people tired. that's our responsibility then, we have also a responsibility whenit is on fire, how will people get out? how will the users could be saved from that situation because at the end, we design for people not for building the top list architects, they have long age there are so many top list architects have long age, above ninety and they still keep on working until their last breath
there are many above ninety in the world.in indonesia, there are many above eighty and they are still working look at another field, above 55 or 60 they have been tired and many get health problems architects in my view...maybe because they're happy because they works based on passion if someone does his/her passion,he/she are fulfilled i don't have the bahasa indonesia for "fulfilled" the heart is full, not empty, not blanknot looking for something to fulfill it
maybe it could be said happybut i prefer the word "fulfilled" it feels this heart is really full.that nourishes the soul i don't believe that all nighters tend to have shorter livespan, or easily got health problems.in architecture it is not proven the all nighters easily got health problemor have shorter livespan is not proven in architecture it means there is another point that is fulfillment, passion, and happiness that they get from their works and professions so that many architects do not wantto retire until their last breath i think our role as an education institutionis to help preparing our young generations
to live more responsibly to think or willing to care and understandthe broader aspects of life but also in the other side could contribute courage or optimism to face the future with more hope and joy so, in the education, the people is the one that we educate, the attitude the students must know, they work for what and for whom i remember mr bianpoen, in his book i was asked to write a foreword you know mr bianpoen, right? he wrote a book with a title"for what, for whom?"
that is absolutely true you, the students, must ask those questions i make this for what, for whom from the instructor point of view is how we deliver those as simple as possible, as unpainful as possible, as joyful as possible, at least enough to start something if the students feel not enough, that is exactly the successful education if the students feel enough, that is dangerous, because actuallythere is many more to be learnt architects do not only dedicate to the clients or society
they have an opportunity to dedicate themselves to the civilization so, i am the architect of this time, not in the past, not even in the future i'm working with people around me in this time, with skills, experties, and technology of this time i have a privilege to leave an opus in this time we are a marker of time that is a duty that really makes us proud as architects architects can help people because he has abilities and competences reading space, there is not many people can do that
create something from nothing to existthat is almost half become god not got, but almost playing god, imagination is really amazing drawings and models are just tools, but imagination, inviting people to experience happiness, happiness of space, beauty of space i travels to many placesto gather piece by piece the experience of space from the world's master architects they give so much things to other people, their nations, their civilizations that is so mind blowing that is more than a community service, helping the poors,
it makes the poor and the rich happy, other people from other cultures too even they can build their nation.soekarno believed that. architecture can be a tool for character building so, i believe this is a very extraordinary profession.
